Questionnaires involving 3,478 renal dialysis patients revealed a higher incidence of suicidal behavior than among the general population. The authors believe that the hemodialysis patient who kills himself does so because of multiple factors-at one time possibly correctable-that combine to form serious emotional conflicts. They urge further studies in this area & note that prolongation of life by artificial means gives rise to ethical dilemmas.
