Discussion is addressed to the nonpsychiatric physician, who is seen as being in the forefront of the recognition & prevention of suicide. The importance of object loss as a dominant factor in suicidal behavior is emphasized. Although it is recommended that serious suicide risks should be referred to a psychiatrist & hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital or ward, it is not always possible.
