The paper discusses the hypothesis that suicide is common where external frustrations & restraints are minimal. Hypothesis was used to account for several phenomena, such as the high suicide rate on the West Coast, the high rate in the spring, & the low rate during war, & to predict other cases where suicidal behaviour might be more common, such as after restoration of sight to those blind from birth.
