This paper has a twofold objective: to present a critical review of Durkheim’s analysis of altruism, deriving therefrom some tenets that would contribute to a new framework for analyzing the behaviour of altruistic suicide; & to illustrate the efficacy of the suggested framework with an historical investigation of the suicide of chaste females recorded in the Ch’ing period of China (1644-1912).
