Based upon interviews and psychological testing of serious student suicide attempters, Hendin detects a lifestyle of physical and emotional suffocation. Case studies illustrate the students repressed on-going relationship to their own parents, often involving a dead parent, brings about a reliance upon depression as a survival mechanism, the prospect of liberation from depression is frequently sufficient to precipitate the suicidal act.(TG)
