This study contrasted suicidal, psychosomatic and nonpsychiatric hospital patients (15 each) in terms of semantic differential ratings of “Myself” and “Other people”. The suicidal group had the lowest appraisals of self in terms of self-evaluation, activity and potency, as well as the highest other ratings. Potency was viewed as particularly important due to the large group difference and its possible relationship with helplessness.
