A popular instrument forthe assessment of clinical depression, the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale, has displayed varied consistency in application. The scale typically indicates elevated depression in the elderly as compared to younger populations. The reliability & factor structure of the scale are examined in 3 age groups: young, “young-old” & “old-old”. Lowered reliability in the assessment of depression in the very old is noted. Recommendations for further research are given.(DD)
