Based on data of 20 countries, it was found that social indicators of women’s social status in modern societies are not significantly related to female suicide rates. The most significant factor which explains variations is the level of familial disintegration (as measured by divorce rates). Familial disintegration was found to be positively related to the female professional participation rate & negatively to female sexual equality.
