This paper discusses some of the dynamic issues that underlie the management of the suicidal individual. Vignettes of 6 cases are presented; 3 of patients who overcame their suicidal impulses & 3 of patients who killed themselves while in treatment. Some of the factors that influenced the outcome in these cases are discussed. To illustrate his own approach, the author presents material from therapy hours of 2 patients, who expressed suicidal ideation, and he shows the techniques for both cases.
