Caring for the dying suicidal patient produces significant emotional strain. Nursing personnel, because they provide the most intimate, regular contact with these patients, risk being emotionally affected. Factors influencing nurses and other staff in caring for these patients include whether or not the patient is conscious, the involvement of family and friends with the patient and staff, the reason for and type of suicide attempt, his past history, and the condition of the patient.(DAB)
