For young women aged 18 to 30 years who attempted suicide, and whose suicide attempts were of widely differing physical threat to life, the experience of parental death and separation or divorce, and of reported childhood stress, was similar, irrespective of the lethality of the suicide attempt. Those who attempted suicide were more likely to report a childhood broken home and that they perceived their parents’ character negatively.
