Proposals for a barrier at the Golden Gate Bridge have been challenged by the contention that suicide attempters would just go elsewhere. This belief is tested by examining the long-term mortality of 515 persons who had attempted suicide at the bridge & a comparison group of 184 non-bridge attempters. Results did not support the hypothesis. Even though rates of suicide were still high compared to the general population, about 90% of the study group did not die by suicide or because of violence.
