Tested the hypothesis an attempt is an indicator of serious, persistent social maladjustment. Interviews & questionnaired 38 white females aged 16-30, seen at a large midwestern hospital because of a 1st attempt. Responses were compared to those obtained from 44 matched controls who had suffered minor accidental trauma. Results indicated little difference in adjustment between the experimental & control groups & that young women’s attempts are not associated with future psychiatric disability.
