Involved assigning a specific counselor to each chronic caller (CC), setting a 1-hr limit on each call & having the centre call the CC weekly instead of waiting for the CC to contact the service. The weekly mean number of calls for the 14 18-63 yr old CCs were similar in the treatment & control groups, in the beginning. At the completion of the treatment (7 wks) the number of calls from the treatment group was significantly less than for the controls. Maintained the trend at a 9-wk follow-up.
