Retirement as a Psychosocial Crisis (IN: Suicide Research, Proceedings of the Seminars of Suicide Research, by Yrjo Jahnsson Foundation, 1974-1977)

An aging person faces many losses as he makes the transition from being an employed middle-aged parent to being a pensioned elderly grandparent. The authors opinion is that if he cannot transfer energies associated with these losses to new interests, self-destructive behavior may result. This project is a prospective study with a follow-up period covering the year preceding & the 5 years following retirement. Subjects will be 300 randomly selected men living in Helsinki who are due to retire.
