This article describes the SOS Service Suicide Prevention Centre that opened in Helsinki in 1970. The Centre endeavours to help any person in a crisis situation and/or inform him of the various treatment centres where he may best be helped with social or personal problems. As well as this clinical work, the Centre is active in research & training. Five research studies that have originated from the SOS Centre are listed at the end of the article. (NBB)
