The quality of research in self-destructive behavior could be improved if researchers would take greater interest in the statistics & analytic techniques available & develop greater awareness of the more common pitfalls in analysis. Most studies fall into the categories of description, prediction & explanation: the author describes the most common statistical techniques used in each category, explaining where problems may occur. Ecological, synechodochic & profile fallacies are examined. (NBB)
