27 chronically ill mental patients were followed up 4 years after their discharge from a state hospital to the Massachusetts Mental Health Center. Data was gathered on the patients’ current place of residence, mental status, hospital time, levels of functioning, & quality of life. 2 policy issues are discussed; the relationship between restrictiveness & type of residence, & the importance to the findings of changes in psychiatric practice over the lifetime of the sample.
