100 consecutive patients who had attempted suicide by poisoning & had been treated in the intoxication ward of a psychiatric hospital in Helsinki in 1963 are reported. 1 of the patients died during the primary treatment phase from the complications of the intoxication. A follow-up study conducted 8 yrs later ascertained that 9% of the patients had died. The mortality was more than double in comparison with the population of corresponding age in Helsinki. Of the deceased, 4 had suicided.
