This article investigates the legal exceptions to abortion which is prohibited in some American states. The authors asserts that although abortions are illegal in some states, exceptions can be made if the pregnancy threatens the mental health of the mother, most often in the form of higher risk of suicide/suicidal attempt. Evidence that discounts the belief that suicidal risk is high during pregnancy is included. Suggested amendments to the criteria for abortion conclude the article. (36 refs) (SC)
