Argues that health problems are linked to involuntary early retirements encouraged by existing government policies. The physician must be alert to the unemployed status of older patients & to signs of depression. The impact of retirement is highlighted by findings that each 1% rise in unemployment is related to a 4.1% increase in suicide & to increases in psychiatric & physical ailments. The major psychological impact of early retirement seems to be upon self-esteem. (RM)
