Reviews the clinical experience & theoretical steps which led Freud to his various conclusions about suicide and attempts to evaluate them in the light of the present-day understanding of suicide & suicide prevention. 3 sections are presented: a) early personal & clinical observations, b) later theoretical contributions, & c) an attempted synthesis & evaluation. Methods & attitudes toward potential suicides used in a major suicide prevention center are discussed in relation to Freud’s theories.
