This article reports the results of a 2 and 4 year follow-up of a sample of under 45 widows & widowers who were unexpectedly & untimely bereaved. At follow-up, those bereaved for whom the death of the spouse was so sudden as to leave little time for preparation were suffering from significantly more negative consequences than the widows(ers) who had more time to prepare.
