Persons depressed for any significant length of time are potentially suicidal. Diagnosis requires inquiry about the depth of the patient’s depression & is the major step in management of the suicidal patient. The suicidal patient has certain characteristics that make suicide more likely but depression is equally serious whether resulting from drugs or intrapsychic causes.(TC)
