This study compared patterns of mortality between suicide attempters, a psychiatric group without suicide attempts and a nonpsychiatric general population over an 11 year period. Demographic characteristics and rates of death by various means were studied. Results showed that suicide attempters have a high risk of premature death due to suicide. It is suggested that to prevent suicide long term follow-up of this group is necessary.
