This paper reviews and challenges the idea that widowed persons have a higher risk of mortality than persons with an intact marriage. Criticisms of cross-sectional and longitudinal data are advanced and while the reviewers conclude the existing data does not unequivocally support the “loss effect” of widowhood, continued research is a worthwhile effort. Directions for research are provided.(KD)
