Depression in children is now accepted as an affective disorder related to unipolar & bipolar illnesses. The interrelation between anxiety & depression, & their origins in early physiological & psychological trauma, are also considered. The increasing incidence of adolescent suicide shows the necessity of developing adequate treatment measures through psychotherapy or the use of antidepressants. The author stresses the importance of distinguishing depression as a symptom & a syndrome. (28 refs)
