Although critically ill or injured patients rushed to hospital emergency rooms have traditionally received immediate treatment, their families and friends have generally not been the focus of attention or care. This article describes the concepts and procedures followed by emergency room social workers at a hospital where a specific protocol has been developed to assist the families of patients who die or are critically ill.
