The growth of self-poisoning has occured through the concurrence of increases in dangerous therapeutic preparations & prescribing. A 1-year study of all survivors of self-poisoning acts admitted to the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh began in June/62. The self-poisoning was a genuinely suicidal act which failed for a minority of patients, while for 4/5’s of thecases the concept of attempted suicide is inapplicable. These patients took the overdose in the belief that they were relatively safe. (LD)
