Based on data from Australia with a suicide attempt being defined as any deliberate act aimed at self destruction & parental loss as a continuous absence for at least 12 months, the findings suggest parental loss, particularly in the first 4 years of life & involving the loss of both parents may predispose patients with neurotic disorders to suicidal behavior. Sex of absent parent, cause of loss & subsequent childhood environment did not prove significant. (GW)
