Participating crisis centres filled out survey sheets from September-November 1978. 2,648 completed surveys were then analysed. Analysis showed that over 2/3 of callers had never phoned a crisis centre before. Most of the callers were adult females who lived alone in a big city. The majority of callers were themselves suicidal & had made a previous suicide attempt. The authors emphasize the importance of crisis line volunteers as a resource & as an information source on other helping agencies.
