This review of suicides in veteran administration hospitals during 1959-66 showed that general medical and surgical hospitals had a lower rate of suicide than neuropsychiatric hospitals. Characteristics and methods of the suicides are explained. Recommendations such as treatment, physical modifications and training for staff are described.
