The hospice movement offers new hope of providing care that will “personalize” death, recognizing it as a part of the individual’s total experience of growth and development. Care is holistic with attention to the mind, spirit and body. Distressing symptoms & pain are relieved so the patient can more realistically deal with death. Whether in an institution or at home, the patient/family unit is at the centre of service, with family members continuing to receive support during their bereavement.
