Argues that type-A behaviour patterns often result from performance-dependency, wherein self-esteem depends upon performance level in some limited criterion behaviours. Failure in performance of these behaviours thus impacts self-esteem & produces an emotional crisis with certain defining characteristics. The numerous origins of performance-dependency & characteristics of performance-dependent clients are listed. Without intervention, the performance-dependent individual may become suicidal.(RM)
