Commented on functioning of volunteers, comparing performance with professionals; characteristics of clients; missed diagnoses & risk factors & nature of calls. Reported is frequent abuse & misuse of the services. Author suggests no evidence services significantly lower suicide rates but sees them as effective in crisis situations. (BS)
