To assess hopelessness (H), depression (D) & self-rated suicide risk, 154 attempters, threateners & controls were rated on the Self-Rating Depression Scale & the Beck Hopelessness Scale. H & D were sig. greater in suicidal subjects. In threateners H & D scores differed sig. btwn high & low suicide intent subjects. In all cases, H correlated more highly with suicide intent than did D. Data are regarded as supporting the hypothesis that H is more closely related to suicide intent than is D.
