This paper reports a controlled, long-term follow-up study of adolescent suicide attempters, using as controls carefully matched youngsters hospitalized for psychiatric illness. Analysis of variables relating to pre-hospital behavior and post-hospital adjustment indicates that the distinguishing characteristics of suicide attempters are fewer than might be expected from the literature.
