Social & psychiatric data on suicide in aged were looked at to gain better understanding of suicide & prevention. Suicide increases with age in both sexes – more pronounced in males. Contributing factors are organic dementia, depression, physical illness, loneliness, retirement & loss of interest opportunities. More attention should be paid to clinical recognition of potential suicides such as masked & overt depression. Preventive measures such as economic & retirement planning essential.
