The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has official responsibility for the investigation of all deaths that are apparently unnatural to determine the cause of death and the classification as to mode: homicide, suicide, accident or natural. All deaths related to drug abuse must be referred to this Office. Investigation includes examination of the scene and circumstances of death; the obtaining of a pertinent history from relatives and police; an autopsy and extensive toxicologic analyses.
