This paper is a brief description of the Massachusetts Mental Health Center’s development of community residential settings for deinstitutionalized clients characterized by low incomes, isolation from their families, & inability to function independently. Discussion includes the following issues: independent living apartments, backup services for tenants, indications of success, establishing group homes, & HUD 202 projects.
