Discusses the role of the psychiatric consultant in relation to a suicidal patient, suggesting how principles of psychological autopsy can be combined with an extended version of the therapeutic consultation. 6 general observations concerning suicidal patients are presented. These were related to the topics explored in psychological autopsy. (16 ref)
