This is a study of all 1147 reported suicides which occurred in Alberta, Canada between 1968 & 1973. Older suicides typically use very lethal means such as firearms for men & hanging for women. Older men less often communicate their intent to commit suicide before the act. Older suicides are less likely than those of younger age to have been involved with alcohol, drugs or to have been a victim of violence prior to death. Old men who live alone are particularly vulnerable to suicide. (DD)
