This paper argues that the primary cause of the grief response is loss in the face of the illusory “narcissistic” belief that humans are in control of events around them, and that part of the grief process involves recognizing personal lack of control while still affirming one’s self. Methods for resolving grief based upon a transformation from “narcissism” to self-affirmation are presented.(KD)
