After proposing a definition of self help groups, the author presents a case study in which the Group Environment Scale (GES) questionnaire was used to evaluate 2 different self help groups (Recovery, Inc. & a Single Parent’s Group). Factors which are conducive to change are found in these groups, ie. warm, interpersonal relationships, lack of confrontation, & various approaches toward personal development. (MG)
