In a study with data from 227 completed suicides, a comparison of those who had a history of previous attempts at suicide (parasuicide) with those who had no such history revealed that the former had a chronic history of psychiatric disturbance. However, both groups of completed suicides had similar degrees of suicidal intent as assessed by an objective measure of suicidal intent based on the circumstances of the suicidal act.
