The study assessed the motives of 107 patients who had used Paracetamol (acitaminophen) as a suicidal agent. In massive doses the drug causes liver necrosis but does not cause loss of consciousness. Results show all patients had expected to lose consciousness rapidly, 11% had some knowledge of potential for liver necrosis, all stated they would not have used the drug if they had known about its effects. Paracetamol is easily obtained. The study recommends public education.
