Gould identifies the psychodynamic processes and sociocultural influences upon children and adolescents as they relate to suicide. Emphasis is given to the multi-factor nature of suicide and the previously underpublicized role of depression. The core factor of suicide, however, is the preceived loss of love. Gould’s observations stem from his psychiatric practice in a New York City hospital. A concluding section focuses upon therapeutic management of youth suicide.
