59 physically abused 5-13 yr olds demonstrated a significantly higher incidence of self-destructive behavior than 2 control groups of nonabused children, 30 neglected & 30 normal. The self-destructive behavior, including suicide attempts & self-mutilation, was potentiated by interrelated variables operating in the abused child & his environment. (26 ref)
