Reviews literature on elderly population in US & Britain. The older white male is a high risk. Physical & mental illnesses contribute to suicide among the aged & some of the drugs prescribed are often accessible for misuse in suicide. Considers responsibilities of the physician & pharmacist in relation to exposure of the elderly patient to lethal drugs. Concludes that change in society’s attitude toward the elderly may alleviate the depressive state which often contributes to suicide potential.
