The author reviews prospective studies of bereavement with some reference to suicide. Young widows & widowers are compared with older spouses with regard to physical distress, psychoactive drug use, hopitalizations & psychiatric consultation. Mortality may increase more among older widowers in the first year. During the first year, men & women handle the many psychologically stressful symptoms with minimal morbidity and mortality.(JB)
